What Is BMI?.

Body Mass Index compares body weight with height. It is a quick screening measure used to group results into broad weight categories, not a diagnosis or a complete assessment of health.

How Is BMI Calculated?.

The metric formula is BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m). Imperial measurements are converted before the same calculation is applied.

BMI Categories.

CategoryBMI
UnderweightBelow 18.5
Healthy Weight18.5–24.9
Overweight25.0–29.9
Obesity30.0 and above

What Does Your BMI Mean?.

The categories describe population-level ranges. A result outside the healthy range can be a reason to look at the wider picture with a qualified healthcare professional, but it does not diagnose any condition.

Limitations of BMI.

BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, account for bone mass, describe body composition or show where fat is distributed. Athletes and highly muscular people may have a high BMI despite relatively low body fat.

BMI vs Body Fat Percentage.

BMI relates total weight to height, while body fat percentage estimates how much of your body weight is fat. Explore the difference with our Body Fat Calculator.
